Zumthor’s cluster of four buildings are situated upon Allmannajuvet gorge, part of the stunning Ryfylke route, which stretches from just outside Stavanger to Røldal.

Allmannajuvet is a ravine or canyon located along the river Storelva in the municipality of Sauda in Rogaland county, N o rway. The ravine is located in a rural, forested area along the Norwegian County Road 520 between the town of Sauda and the village of Hellandsbygda. This was the site of a large zinc mine which began operations in 1881 and closed in 1899, due to the changing market prices of zinc and high extraction costs. The mining operations brought life to the village with as many as 168 employees and the export of ore on ships heading abroad. The operation was a forerunner of subsequent hydroelectric development and industrialisation in Sauda in Ryfylke. Today, the mining area is a museum. As part of the establishment The Allmannajuvet Zinc Mine Museum is an industrial archaeology museum – sited in the municipality of Sauda, southern Norway – designed by renowned Swiss architect Peter Zumthor.

Initially conceived in 2002, the £9.5 million Allmannajuvet project aims to increase visitor numbers to the region by illuminating its old mining history. The scheme called for a museum building, a café, lavatories and parking linked by a network of paths and stairs.
