Professor Wolfgang Iser of the Department of English, University of California, Irvine, died January 24, 2007, in Constance, Germany. At the time of his death, Professor Iser was one of the most prominent literary theorists in the world.

Together with his colleague Hans Robert Jauss, he is the founder of the Konstanz School of reception aesthetics which has had a significant influence on Anglo-American reader-response criticism. Wolfgang Iser’s (1926-2007) theories of reader response were initially presented in a lecture of 1970 entitled The Affective Structure of the Text, and then in two major works, The Implied Reader (1972) and The Act of Reading (1976). Abstract Adopting the perspective of a “Harrisian” integrational linguist, this article identifies two conflicting ways in which Wolfgang Iser describes “indeterminacy” and its implications on the act of reading in his “reception theory”. It will be argued that while his understanding of contextualisation and recontextualisation is markedly similar to the integrational idea of the Iser tries to explain the nature of interaction between a text and a reader stating that it is a complex process but the relationship is not just like between a transmitter and a receiver.
